In The Studio

In 10 days I will celebrate my birthday. It's a number I'm in awe in for more reasons
than I can share. For one thing I remember like it was yesterday when my mother turned
this age and retired! She was so alive and full of dreams about what the rest of her
life would be like. Fast forward 23 years and she no longer knows who I am and only
one of those dreams came true. With that in mind I feel like I don't have a day to waste
and then a tiny Mosquito bite attempted to side-rail me. No details necessary, but suffice
it to say that it's been one Hell of week!

This fabric collage took forever to come together. But I was determined to
use the rust dyed fabric that was inkjet printed with a photo of grasses that I
photographed 3 summers ago. And somehow incorporate the deconstructed screen print
at the bottom of the collage. It wasn't until I created a design
from a photo of a Jungle Geranium and printed it out that
the collage finally worked. At least I think it does.

Details: digital image printed on rust dyed fabric.
Deconstructed screen print. Digital image of
Jungle Geranium printed onto fabric. Machine stitched
and attached to a black stretched canvas.

This piece is still a work-in-progress. Coffee dyed sun print, painted fabric on
a deconstructed screen print background. Hand-stitched.

Sorry to hear about the bite and your horrid week, I hope things start to improve again now. I think I am probably a couple of years ahead of you as I get to draw my state pension later this year. It is sobering as you enter these later years and I recognise the feelings of panic almost that there are so many things we still want to do and how the years in front are less than the ones that have gone. It's not all doom and gloom though, we have life's experience behind us and can maybe narrow down what is important. My creaky body tells me I am ageing but I am trying very hard not to focus on the end of the road but on doing as much as I can here and now. I do feel overwhelmed though from time to time. In case I am not online at the time I hope you have a good and Happy Birthday. xx

Oh my gosh Gail! Both of these pieces are SO GORGEOUS!!! Your finished piece is perfect and your work in progress is just so fascinating. I'm in awe of your design talents.

I'm sorry about your set back with the bug. No fun at all.
I hope your birthday is a good one for you. I can only imagine the pain your feel about your mom. Life can be so sad.

Love you friend. Hugs.

So sorry to hear that you have been ill... I have had my share of insect torments as well, but not as serious... sending you hugs....and knowing that your healing will be swift...
.... and how wonderful that you have your Mother's life as an example to see what you want to do with the rest of your life!! I want these days to be the best... bugs or no and I am determined that they shall be the happiest!! xoxo
